James Brokenshire has given his support to local efforts to raise awareness of mental health issues as part of World Mental Health Day on 10 October. The MP spoke to health professionals and support workers at a special stall on the Broadway in Bexleyheath about community services to support local mental health needs in Bexley. Those taking part in the event included Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, Rethink Bexley and First Step Trust Bexley.
Commenting James said:
"As many as one in four people will suffer from a mental health issue during their lives and yet it still seems to be regarded as a taboo subject. We need to break this stigma and encourage people in need of care to obtain the support they need. That's why I'm pleased to support an event like this in Bexley which not only highlights the issue, but allows people to obtain more information for themselves, friends or family on how to obtain help if they need to."
