Sidcup has been recognised as one of the UK’s top twenty leading locations for online business growth according to internet giant Google. The firm has given Sidcup an ‘eTown’ award to indicate the rate of growth of local online entrepreneurial activity. According to research conducted by the company, small and medium sized firms based in Sidcup were some of the most active in the UK in seeking to take advantage of the digital economy and harness the internet to grow their business.
Google shortlisted 700 towns across the country for use of the firm’s online advertising service and compared the percentage change in use between 2010 and 2011. Sidcup saw the 11th largest percentage increase with an almost 23% increase in the number of businesses using the online service.
James Brokenshire accepted a special eTown trophy on behalf of Sidcup at an event at the House of Commons.
Commenting James said:
“There is little doubt that the internet has changed the way we work, the way we shop and the way that businesses operate. In an increasingly online world it’s important that local businesses take advantage of the new opportunities available. This award and the recognition of Sidcup as an ‘eTown’ is really encouraging in underlining that local firms are seeking to innovate and take advantage of the benefits of the digital economy.”
