James Brokenshire has welcomed comments by Rail Minister Theresa Villiers that Southeastern Trains should be more responsive to its customers and improve performance on local rail services. Ms Villiers comments came during a Parliamentary debate secured by Bexleyheath & Crayford MP David Evennett on current poor performance on local train services. The Minister also revealed that nearly two thirds of the delays and cancellations on the Southeastern network were down to Network Rail which operates and maintains the track and signalling.
Commenting Ms Villiers said:
"It is imperative that reliability on the Southeastern network improves...I have asked the rail industry's national taskforce specifically to consider the performance of Southeastern and Network Rail in Kent. We need improved performance from the operator and Network Rail, as the infrastructure provider, if we are to make progress."
The Minister added that she will be seeking urgent assurances on steps to improve the overall performance at forthcoming meetings with rail executives.
Commenting James Brokenshire said: "Hard pressed commuters will appreciate the comments of the Minister and her commitment to press both Southeastern and Network Rail to up their game significantly and run a much more reliable rail service through Bexley."
