£1.3bn funding boost for schools

James Brokenshire has welcomed this week’s announcement from Education Secretary, Justine Greening, that the core school’s budget will be given a £1.3bn boost to increase the amount of funding per pupil and help deliver the most significant improvement to the school funding system for over a decade.

The announcement of the additional funding follows news of the introduction of the Government’s Fair Funding Formula, which will help to equalise some of the historic differences in funding allocated to individual schools.

The extra money will also help protect funding for high-needs pupils who need additional support to assist them in their learning and allow for a renewed focus on working with teachers, parents and schools across the country in order to continue the drive for ever higher standards.

Commenting following the Education Secretary’s announcement, James said:

“High quality education is what allows young people to develop and get on in life and is therefore one of the key priorities for this Government. Since 2010, the schools budget has been protected and this announcement will support schools to go even further in improving standards and helping to fulfil our pledge of a million more children in Good or Outstanding schools by the end of this Parliament.”
