Laser Pen Menace to Flights

James Brokenshire has praised the Police in combatting the threat from pilots being dazzled by lights from laser pens being shone at arriving and departing aircraft at Gatwick Airport.  Around 18 incidents were reported at the airport between January and September last year.  Sussex Police have successfully brought a number of cases to court.

Responding to a question from Crawley MP Henry Smith who said hundreds of lives were potentially being put at risk, the Security Minister said that whilst there were no current plans to classify laser pens as offensive weapons, the Government was determined to ensure that best practice was shared between forces to help deal with this serious matter.
