James Brokenshire has welcomed new steps to mark the start of the Christmas trading season in Blackfen. The new community initiative, supported by local traders, will see an official 'switch on' event for the Christmas lights to mark the build up to the festive season and to encourage people to 'shop locally' in Blackfen.
In addition to the lights, Blackfen Community Library will be playing host to Santa, who will be handing out presents to children before the lights are switched on formally by the Mayor of Bexley at 4:30pm on Saturday 26 November.
Local businesses have contributed to make this year’s Christmas in Blackfen a success, but the organisers are looking to raise additional funds to attract even more people to Blackfen and to bring the community together at this special time of year. Local residents and businesses wishing to make donations can visit the Blackfen Community Library in the days leading up to the event to offer even the smallest donation.
Commenting ahead of the switching on ceremony, James said:
“It is great to see the community in Blackfen coming together to celebrate Christmas and the town’s High Street. I pay tribute to the organisers who are busy making preparations for the switching on ceremony on 26 November and I look forward to joining the Mayor and others in a fortnight’s time. I hope that the Christmas celebrations will help strengthen the sense of community and see more people supporting Blackfen and its High Street.”
