Communities Secretary

James Brokenshire serves in Government as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. In this role, James has responsibility for ensuring people throughout the country have access to affordable and high quality housing, growing local economies, building integrated communities and supporting effective local government.

Prior to becoming Communities Secretary, James was Secretary of State for Northern Ireland with responsibility for ensuring the smooth operation of the devolution settlement and promoting Northern Ireland as a place in which to invest and do business. Previously, James was Immigration Minister at the Home Office, with responsibility for securing the UK’s borders and operational oversight of UK Border Force, UK Visas and Immigration and Immigration Enforcement. Prior to this post, James was Security Minister where he was responsible for the delivery of a safe and secure London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games working alongside the Police, Security Service and other Government agencies as well as LOCOG the Games organisers. James also led the negotiations with the Jordanian Government to secure the deportation of Abu Qatada.
